P is for, well, a whole lot! A plethora of things, if you will. This week in our home school we were on the letter P. The more I thought about it, the more songs, foods, animals, and concepts that start with the letter P came to mind! If you’re teaching the alphabet at home, here are some P songs and supplemental materials for you!
P is for POPCORN
Sizzle sizzle sizzle sizzle POP! We love popcorn here and it is so much fun to hear the kernels pop in the pot. Before we made our popcorn, we watched this fun cartoon featuring Jam Cat Jagger!
This song is a fun one to sing while you wait for your popcorn to pop. We happen to have bongos and maracas here, each of which make a fun popping sound, but we found it more fun to turn a pot (P is for pot!) upside down and hit it with the back end of a wooden spoon. If you’re teaching instrument families, this may align with “P is for Percussion.”
P is for PENGUIN
Our unit theme for the week was “Polar Animals,” which was also by design because “P” is for “polar”, “polar bear”, and “penguin”.
The Sesame Street song Doing the Penguin is far and away one of my favorites (I rave about it here, too). The muted trumpet adds such a fun element and the dance moves are so simple.
The Learning Station also does a fun penguin themed action song called The Penguin Song. It definitely had us walking around yelling, “Penguins, attention!”
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even make some penguin pancakes.
P is for PIZZA
For a little while, we were making pizza every Friday. It was a fun day that my daughter deemed “Ninja Turtle Day”. We’d make the dough in the morning, roll it out, build our personal pizzas, and listen to the Ninja Turtles Theme since those Ninja Turtles love their pizza, too (check out Mr. DJ singing the Ninja Turtle theme here)!
Another funny pizza song that we enjoy is Dr. Jean’s Pepperoni Pizza, which plays with vowel sounds similar to Apples and Bananas.
P is for Potato
I love potatoes. I could eat potatoes in every meal in dozens of different ways. Our week opened with a nod to the potato and the letter “P” with some roasted lemon-garlic potatoes for dinner and some Hot Potato singing after. I have always loved and used Hot Potato by The Wiggles with success. The dancing in the video is silly and they all love the gibberish in between the verses. Inside the classroom a Mr. Potato Head is a great tool to aid in lessons about the five senses.
P is for PEANUT BUTTER.
Both of my kids are allergic to peanut butter, and it’s a food I miss eating, but we still sing about peanuts. Sometimes, we even amend the words. For example, in Peanut Butter and Jelly (Super Simple Songs), we change the lyrics to Almond, “almond butter AND JELLY”. Now, I understand this no longer uses the letter P but if you’re in an allergy household and looking for some new ideas, it can definitely work. We also change “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” lyrics to “Buy me some almonds and Cracker Jacks.” Which reminds me that I told them we’d make “Almond Jacks” one day.
